Channel Migration to future state architecture

This migration aims to modernise infrastructure, improve scalability, and enhance operational efficiency, enabling the client to better meet evolving industry demands. The project involves migrating all existing content, metadata, and workflows, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations. By optimising content management and distribution through a new, scalable architecture, the client aims to streamline workflows, reduce costs, and improve overall service quality for both internal users and audiences.

Project Overview

The channel migration project aimed to transition our client from their legacy systems to a future state architecture that enabled more efficient content distribution, improved scalability, and enhanced operational capabilities.

This migration involved moving all existing content, metadata, workflows, and associated infrastructure to a modern, cloud-based platform, providing the client with increased flexibility and the ability to adapt to evolving industry demands.

The project needed to ensure minimal disruption to existing operations, while laying the groundwork for more streamlined workflows, higher-quality content delivery, and future technological advancements.

Project Approach

Discovery and Assessment

  • Conduct a thorough audit of the current channel architecture, identifying all key systems, workflows, content libraries, and dependencies

  • Engage stakeholders across departments to gather business and technical requirements for the future state architecture

  • Evaluate content formats, metadata structures, and integration points for smooth migration

Future State Architecture Design

  • Design the future state architecture, focusing on cloud-native or hybrid solutions that provide scalability, improved performance, and integration with existing systems like MAM/DAM platforms

  • Map out workflows, data structures, and content hierarchies to ensure seamless alignment with the new architecture

  • Identify and plan for necessary integrations, including rights and title management, scheduling, and localization systems

Data and Content Migration Strategy

  • Develop a detailed migration strategy for content, metadata, and associated assets, including both historical and live data

  • Implement automated tools and scripts to ensure efficient extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes for all data types

  • Create backup and rollback procedures to safeguard against data loss or corruption during the migration

Pilot and Testing

  • Execute a pilot migration with a select set of channels and content to validate the future state architecture and migration processes

  • Conduct comprehensive testing on content delivery workflows, integration points, and performance benchmarks to ensure operational readiness

  • Address any issues encountered during the pilot, refining processes and ensuring scalability

Full-Scale Migration

  • Roll out the full migration, moving all channels, content, and associated systems to the future state architecture

  • Maintain communication with stakeholders throughout the process, providing status updates and addressing any challenges in real time

  • Ensure the minimal impact on current operations, scheduling migrations during low-traffic periods when possible

Post-Migration Validation

  • Validate the integrity of the migrated data and confirm that all content, metadata, and workflows are functioning as expected in the new environment

  • Conduct a final round of testing across all channels and systems to ensure performance and reliability meet project expectations

Training and Knowledge Transfer

  • Provide training to internal teams on managing and maintaining the new architecture, including content workflows, system integrations, and troubleshooting protocols

  • Ensure comprehensive documentation is delivered for future reference and system maintenance

Ongoing Support and Optimisation

  • Offer post-migration support to address any issues or adjustments needed as the system stabilises in its new state

  • Continuously monitor performance, providing insights and optimisations to ensure the architecture evolves with the broadcaster’s growing needs.
